Time to Tango!

TangoAs people move to new places, they bring their music with them. New styles of music are born when people from different cultures meet.

Tango began in late 19th century Argentina and Uruguay with the working class Spanish and African immigrants. After their long days of hard work, the laborers played and danced the tango at night on street corners and in bars.

It is now very popular around the world, with international tango shows, orchestras and dance competitions.

TangoTango is like walking with a partner and the music. A good dancer is one who makes you see the music. The dancers will keep their feet close to the floor, their ankles and knees brushing as one leg passes the other. Tango dancing relies heavily on IMPROVISATION; there is no “basic step.”

ListenLISTEN to one of the most famous tangos ever written, El Choclo by Ángel Villoldo. Click the back browser button to return to the Exploration.
