What is Chamber Music?
Chamber music is written for a small number of musicians with one instrument per part. This is different from an orchestra in which there may be many violinists playing the same notes together! There is no conductor in front leading the group and the musicians take turns as leaders, depending on who has the MELODY.
Chamber music is called “the music of friends” because the musicians are equally important and share ideas cooperatively with each other.
Look at the picture below of an orchestra. How many of the same instruments can you count? Can you find the conductor? How can you tell?
