Fall 2009 Events

Keowee Chamber Music presents Elegy, featuring music and poetry of the Holocaust.

Elegy celebrates the power of the human spirit to triumph over adversity through music.

In commemoration of Kristallnacht or the Night of Broken Glass, a coordinated attack on Jewish people and their property in Nazi Germany and Austria through the night of November 9, 1938

  • Tuesday, November 10, 7 PM For the UNCA Community

Concert with discussion as part of Holocaust and the Arts,

Laurel Forum in Karpen Hall, UNCA

The Program

  • Music: Love Songs, Op. 26 (1939) from Viktor Ullman (1898-1944), Sonata for flute and piano (1943) by Leo Smit (1900-1943) and compositions from other musicians who perished in the camps along with music of Kurt Weill, Achat Sha’alti (1991) by Paul Schoenfield and From the Wall (2005) by Michael Cohen
  • The musicians: Tena Greene, soprano, Kate Steinbeck, flutist / artistic director, Franklin Keel, cello, and Dan Weiser, piano
  • Poetry read by Dr. Richard Chess, Director, the Center for Jewish Studies at UNCA and Professor, Department of Literature and Language

Elegy is a production of Keowee Chamber Music and is made possible through the generosity of the Deutsch Family.

 

                               

Friday, November 13, 7:30 PM: CD PRELUDE CONCERT

Flutist Kate Steinbeck and guitarist Amy Brucksch play works from their upcoming CD at Saint Mary's Church, 337 Charlotte St., Asheville, NC 28801 www.stmarysasheville.org

Kate and Amy are soon putting the final tracks down on their CD and want to invite the community to be part of the process. Admission to this concert is free - Pay what you like! Spend $15 and reserve a CD. Come on out for sumptuous sounds in an intimate space!
